Kinark Child and Family Services is a leading child and youth service organization in Ontario which provides a wide range of evidence-based services that include individual, family and group counselling for children and youth with complex needs and their families.  Kinark’s three program streams include: Community-Based Child and Youth Mental Health, Autism and Forensic Mental Health/Youth Justice.

SNAP® Model is a program for children aged 6 to 11 who are engaging in aggressive, antisocial behaviour and/or have come into contact with the police as a result of their behaviour. Stop Now and Plan (SNAP®) is a manualized cognitive-behavioural program with a goal to prevent further development of antisocial behaviour and chances of future contact with the law. SNAP® helps children and parents deal effectively with anger by teaching them how to respond in a way that makes their problems smaller, not bigger.

Social Worker - SNAP (Stop Now and Plan) Program

Simcoe Program –  Barrie, ON

Temporary, Full-Time – *35 hours/week (1 year contract)


*The successful candidate will be required to work some evenings a week based on client needs.

Pay Grid: $35.43 - $37.21 - $39.06


Job Summary:

Reporting to the Supervisor, SNAP Boys and Girls, the Social Worker will have a sound understanding of the theories that inform the development and treatment of problem behaviours and emotional difficulties in latency-aged children and their families. The Social Worker will engage often hard-to-reach clients and work collaboratively with the family to develop a treatment plan tailored to their individual strengths and needs, managing risky behaviours when necessary. In addition, the Social Worker will be providing therapy to the children and provide support to the parents while endorsing a scientist-practitioner model, delivering an evidence-based program which includes individual, family and group counselling. *The successful candidate will be required to work flexible hours including at minimum 2 evenings per week. In addition, they may be required to work within the clients’ home, in the community, and/or in the school environment.  This position is covered by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) Local 355 group. 


Duties & Responsibilities (are not limited to):

  • Assess child and family strengths and needs, including risk identification.
  • Develops treatment plans and goals with the family addressing risk management.
  • Carries out various treatment components including individual, family and group counselling with parents/caregivers and child.
  • Implements SNAP therapeutic model guided by CBT framework and additional modalities as required.
  • Manages high-risk and aggressive behaviour in accordance with Agency standards.
  • Follows program guidelines including writing of reports and record keeping.
  • Provide case management and service co-ordination as required, and liaises with internal and community resources/partners(e.g. police) and acts as an advocate when needed.
  • Participation in quality assurance, evaluation and research activities.



  • A Masters Degree in Social Work is required; applicants with a Masters Degree in a related field will be considered.
  • Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Worker and Social Services Worker.
  • A minimum of  one year of clinical/mental health experience working with complex needs clients is preferred .
  • Experience working with families experiencing parenting challenges and child mental health and/or behavioural issues.
  • A highly developed clinical intervention skill set.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, engagement and sustainability skills.
  • Working knowledge of evidence informed therapy models and techniques, and the ability to work with families in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Familiarity with fundamentals of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, parent management training, and behaviour management.
  • Experience with trauma and attachment interventions an asset.
  • Computer literacy and effective report writing abilities.
  • Enthusiasm, versatility and adaptability skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Advance knowledge of group dynamics is required.
  • Travel is required for this position; the successful candidate must have a valid Ontario driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle and be willing to obtain automobile insurance which includes driving for business purposes with a minimum liability of one million dollars.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including a Vulnerable Sector Screening) and Pre-Employment Medical.
