Kinark Child and Family Services is a leading child and youth service organization in Ontario, which provides a wide range of evidence-based services that include individual, family and group counseling for children and youth with complex needs and their families.  Kinark’s three program streams include: Community-Based Child and Youth Mental Health, Autism, and Forensic Mental Health/Youth Justice.


Syl Apps Youth Centre (Syl Apps) is a secure youth mental health facility in Oakville that can provide support for up to 48 youth at a time. Syl Apps operates three programs: (1) Secure treatment (mandated by the Child & Family Services Act—CFSA) (males and females) ;  (2) Secure detention and custody (mandated by the Youth Criminal Justice Act—YCJA) (males and females); and (3) It is also the only facility in Ontario designated to accept youth by order of the Ontario Review Board.   We are committed to providing a range of services and a high standard of care for young people and their families.

Syl Apps Youth Centre – Oakville, ON

*There are no guarantee of hours, the successful candidate will be required to work hours of days, evenings, weekends and on-call.

Hourly Rate: $36.32 – $38.14 – $40.04



Job Summary:

Reporting to the Nurse Manager, the Registered Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care to the clients at Syl Apps.  The majority of the clients admitted to Syl Apps are between the ages of 12-18; in some cases, clients are in their early 20s.  The Registered Nurse will be working as a member of the Nursing Team, and will facilitate professional nursing practices that support the delivery of client centered care at Kinark Child and Family Services, working on site at Syl Apps Youth Centre in an interdisciplinary team.    


Duties & Responsibilities:

o    Participate, initiate and/facilitate individual nursing care plan for applicable youth

o    Perform initial comprehensive assessments and ongoing focused assessments

o    Work within a therapeutic environment providing health teaching or counseling on health care related matters

o    Provide emergency interventions as needed

o    Administer medications and monitor for possible side effects as well as benefits

o    Liaise with all other inter professional team members

o    Assume on call responsibilities as scheduled

o    Have knowledge of general nursing theory, practices and procedures and College of Nurses of Ontario standards of practice to provide nursing services



o    Bachelor’s degree in Nursing

o    Member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario 

o    Current First Aid/CPR Level C certificate. 

o    Excellent clinical nursing skills with experience in psychiatric-mental health nursing Excellent communication and demonstrated interpersonal skills

o    Strong working knowledge of adolescent health

o    Knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy  and Dialectical behavior therapy  would be an asset

o    Ability to assess, plan and implement a personalized approach to service delivery

o    Ability to work evenings, weekends, shift work and be available for on call        

o    Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including a Vulnerable Sector Screening) and Pre-Employment Medical. 

o    Candidates Bilingual in English and French will be given special consideration.
