Child and Youth Worker

Community Mental Health – Durham

Hourly Rate: $26.43 – $27.75 - $29.16

 

* The successful candidate will be required to work some evenings and weekends a week based on client needs.

 

 

 

Job Summary:

This position is an integral part of a busy, dynamic and growing clinical program at Kinark Community Mental Health in the Community Mental Health – Central/East Program regions (York, Simcoe, Durham, Peterborough, and Northumberland).  The Child and Youth Worker (CYW) will be expected to apply psycho-social and behavioural interventions as the main method of creating change within the living environment of the child, youth and family. While the therapist (e.g., social work, psychology, psychiatry) will provide mental health evidenced-based interventions, typically for an hour or two per week or more dependent upon the treatment goals, the interventions provided during the other 23 hours, or less, outside therapy or psychological/psychiatric services are typically provided by CYW professionals. Child and Youth Workers are considered change agents and create change by promoting emotional, social, and behavioural change and well-being within the context of daily living, the techniques employed by CYWs are especially practical in nature. The interventions provided consider the living environment and take place within that environment, such as within the family, the community and other social institutions. Because of the in-vivo nature of the CYW work, the CYW will be expected to effectively use de-escalation strategies to respond to any potential crises in the moment. Due to the CYWs ability to practically apply psycho-social mental health theory to the life situation of children, youth, and families at all levels of need across our continuum of care, they will be instrumental as a group facilitator or co-facilitator and will be expected to participate in group interventions. The Child and Youth Worker – Community Mental Health position is covered by the Communications Workers of America, Local 30248.
 

Duties & Responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Connect and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners.
  • Conduct Functional Behavioural Assessments for targeted behaviours.
  • Support caregivers in developing and implementing consistent and functional structure and routines in the home environment.
  • Educate and provide in-vivo coaching to caregivers and/or youth in:
    • Conflict and crisis management techniques
    • Communication skills
    • Social skills
    • Activities of daily living
    • Skill generalization to home, school and community environments
  • Facilitate identified therapeutic exposures.
  • Identify barriers to treatment implementation within the home, school and community environments and conduct solution analysis to resolve.
  • Prepare for and facilitate or co-facilitate group interventions.
  • Educate and support children, youth and families in learning about community resources and accessing them.
  • Complete all contact notes and documentation in accordance with agency standards.
  • Collaborate with other members of the treatment team and participate in interagency/team meetings (e.g. IDC)
  • Attend regular supervision.

 

Education and Experience Qualifications:

o    Minimum of a Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent

o    Must be registered and/or in the process of registering with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). 

o    Minimum of two years of relevant experience working in children’s mental health.

o    Experience in providing a range of treatment programs which address the social, emotional and behavioural needs of children and their families in various contexts.

o    An understanding of the complexities of working with multi-stressed individuals and families is required.

o    Experience and knowledge in crisis intervention is an asset. 

o    Preparedness to participate in on going professional development

o    Advance knowledge of group dynamics is required.

o    Experience in Evidence Based Programming (Triple P, SNAP, SNAP Parent, Coping Cat and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) are required.

o    Training in Suicide Risk Assessment/support (ASIST by Living Works) considered an asset and/or other youth suicide intervention training.

o    Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

o    Computer literacy and effective report writing abilities.

o    Travel is required for this position, the successful candidate must have a valid Ontario driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle and be willing to obtain automobile insurance which includes driving for business purposes with a minimum liability of one million dollars.

o    Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including a Vulnerable Sector Screening) and Pre-Employment Medical.

o    Candidates Bilingual in English and French will be given special consideration.
